And with respect to churn, while we don't give out churn guidance, churn has continued to come down. And it's also a part of how we've now adjusted our promotional cadence throughout the rest of the year.

Part of it is just the hangover or the follow-through from how strong Q4 tends to be. Later in the call, CFO Vogel explained more specifics:Īnd so when you look at Q1 in general, it continues to become just a smaller part of our overall subs picture every year. Answering a question about the trend of adding 27 million net premium subs annually, CFO Vogel said they don’t expect material changes and he repeated the fact that the first quarter has become increasingly less important for yearly growth. He asked listeners to keep in mind the fact that anticipated promotional campaign activity and other initiatives hurt 1Q22 with respect to the 2022 year as a whole. Despite the low premium sub guidance for the seasonal first quarter, CFO Paul Vogel said in the 4Q21 call that they don’t see material changes in the trajectory for growth in monthly active users and premium subs when it comes to the entire year of 2022. Spotify’s ( NYSE: SPOT) 4Q21 press release showed 180 million premium subscribers and the stock didn’t do well after the guidance forecasted just 183 million paid subscribers for 1Q22.
